We’re back with the second ever Formulator Bowl as we welcome the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky from the Sun Belt and the Rockets of Toledo from the MAC.
The Hilltoppers, representing the Sun Belt Conference, come into the game with an impressive 8-4 record, led by the seasoned coaching of Bobby Petrino. Their opponents, the Toledo Rockets from the MAC, boast a respectable 7-5 record under the guidance of head coach Matt Campbell.

Western Kentucky comes roaring back in the second quarter. Quarterback Brandon Doughty finds his rhythm, throwing two touchdown passes, one to Willie McNeal and another to Nicholas Norris. Then Toledo responds with a touchdown of their own, courtesy of running back David Fluellen. The Hilltoppers’ defense manages to intercept a pass, setting up a Garrett Schwettman field goal. As the halftime whistle blows, Western Kentucky leads. Score: Toledo 10, Western Kentucky 17
Third Quarter:
Toledo opens the second half with a sense of urgency. Terrance Owens connects with Bernard Reedy once again, this time for a touchdown, evening the score at 17-17. Western Kentucky’s defense, however, steps up, forcing a Toledo fumble that sets up another Schwettman field goal. Then the Hilltoppers regain the lead with a touchdown from Keshawn Simpson, but Toledo responds immediately with a touchdown of their own, making it 24-24. Score: Toledo 24, Western Kentucky 24
Fourth Quarter:
In the final quarter of the Formulator Bowl, the excitement reaches a fever pitch. Toledo’s defense delivers a crucial interception, and they capitalize on it with a touchdown pass to Alonzo Russell to take the lead 31-24. But Western Kentucky refuses to back down. Brandon Doughty engineers a thrilling drive, capping it off with a touchdown pass to Leon Allen. With the game tied at 31-31, it all comes down to the wire. Score: Toledo 31, Western Kentucky 31 – WE’RE GOING TO OVERTIME IN THE FORMULATOR BOWL!
Overtime:
As regulation time ends in a dramatic tie, the teams head into overtime, setting the stage for a Formulator Bowl classic. Both teams have a chance to win it with their offensive prowess, but it’s the Toledo Rockets who strike first in the extra period. David Fluellen bulldozes his way into the end zone for a touchdown. Now, it’s Western Kentucky’s turn. On fourth down, they go for it all, but Toledo’s defense stands firm, intercepting Brandon Doughty’s pass in the end zone, SEALING THE VICTORY!
