Thursday Night Football Recap – Chiefs Choke

The Chiefs blew it last night. With just 8 seconds left between them and a division championship plus nearly clinching homefield throughout the AFC Playoffs, the Chiefs gave up a touchdown and then a 2 point conversion by the Chargers to a wide open player to lose 29-28. The game was brutal to watch at times with so many penalties.

Andy Reid continued to show he lacks the killer instinct to close games out. I don’t get how everyone praises him as an outstanding playcaller. He has good offenses but he can’t win the big games. The three biggest Chiefs’ games this season all ended in losses by a total of seven points. All to double digit win playoff teams.  Somehow the “brilliant” playcaller can’t call a play to get a first down to close a game out.

Last night I got a case of déjà vu. It was reminiscent of the January playoff debacle when the Chiefs lost to the Titans. Leading 21-3 in the second half, the Chiefs ended up one point short and we had another playoff loss in Kansas City. Andy Reid can’t seem to call the plays that lead to first downs. Maybe it’s player execution, but there’s been turnover at nearly every position for the Chiefs during Andy Reid’s tenure and there’s only one playoff win. That win was on the road in Houston as Brian Hoyer had an epic failure at the QB position that ended his Texans career on that Saturday afternoon a few years ago.

This is Marty Schottenheimer all over again. Great regular season performances turn to crushing playoff failures. I’m tired of celebrating Arrowhead being the NFL’s loudest stadium. Let’s celebrate playoff wins, Super Bowls! That’s the goal right? I question that. Is Clark Hunt and crew in it to just stay competitive or is the Super Bowl the goal? If Andy Reid flames out in the playoffs again and is retained as coach we’ll know the answer.

A side note – Congratulations to Tony Gonzalez on having his number retired in Kansas City last night. One of the best Chiefs ever. He played on some teams that had offenses I think were even more fun to watch than this year’s version. Loved watching him catch a TD from Trent Green and dunking it over the crossbar. Dick Vermeil and Al Saunders really had some dynamic offenses in KC, they just had horrendous defenses that led to playoff disappointments…I feel we’re headed for another year like that Chiefs fans.

It’s Bowl Season!

Saturday bowl season ramps up with a day full of games.  I love the bowls and watching how conferences do in the bowl season.  Bowls are always interesting to see which teams are still motivated and which ones quit on the season.  This always leads to upsets and blowouts.

If you’re looking for teams to fade or follow, look for who overachieved and who underachieved.  Evaluate schedules. Did a team beat all the teams it should have and lost to every team better than them?  They’re probably in over their head in the bowl game.

Which coach is new and these extra practices really helps him build confidence in his players and their roles on the team.
