Matt’s Mind: ATS Thoughts for the NCAA Tournament – March 24, 2013

It was just last Sunday, the field was announced and now 44 teams have already been eliminated.  The SportsFormulator.com College Basketball Predictions were 7-1 ATS yesterday on NCAA Tournament games.   Here are my thoughts (against the spread) for round 3 or the second part of the round of 32 in order of tipoff:

Iowa State vs. Ohio State

Both teams dominated their first games in the tournament.  Iowa State will need to keep the uptempo style and hope to simply out run the Buckeyes.  I think Aaron Craft will lock down the Cyclones at the three point line and get the Buckeyes marching on to the Sweet 16.

ATS Play:  Ohio State -7

Temple vs. Indiana

Temple played well their first game but Indiana was rolling.  I think the Hoosiers look locked in and are going to be tough to bounce out.  Temple will have to shoot very well to win this one.  I think the Hoosiers run away with this one.

ATS Play:  Indiana -11.5

North Carolina vs. Kansas

Kansas struggled most of the game against Western Kentucky while Carolina got off to a hot start and was able to hold on against Villanova.  I think KU advances but UNC is gonna hang around.  I think the key for a Tarheel upset is getting James Michael McAdoo going and hope he can get Jeff Withey in foul trouble.  I see KU winning an entertaining game.

ATS Play:  North Carolina +6

Minnesota vs. Florida

Florida played great D in shutting down Northwestern State while Minnesota simply imposed their will in eliminating UCLA.  This is a great game where the winner could be headed to the Final Four.  They matchup well together.  I’ve thought Minnesota was the most underperforming team in the nation this year.  Florida has been steady all year even though they had a few hiccups in SEC play.  I’ll take the Gophers with points.

ATS Play: Minnesota +8.5

Florida Gulf Coast vs. San Diego State

I was blown away with the play of FGCU.  They were uptempo and seemed every other play in the second app was a three pointer or spectacular slam dunk.  My concern with them is they seems like they’d won the National Championship with that win.  I think there will be a letdown here and I like SDSU to pull away.

ATS Play: San Diego State -7

La Salle vs. Ole Miss

La Salle held on to eliminate K-State while Ole Miss just shutdown Wisconsin.  Very impressed with how Ole Miss hung in while struggling to score early in the game.  They’ve got the momentum from the SEC tournament still working for them and I see it continuing.  I’d like to see Marshall Henderson play for at least another week

ATS Play: Mississippi -3.5

Illinois vs. Miami (FL)

Miami is playing very well.  Illinois won but was erratic.  Their game with Colorado was a series of runs back and forth and they happened to have more points at the end.  Miami is going to force Illinois off the three point line and that’s gonna get them marching to the Sweet 16.

ATS Play: Miami -6.5

Creighton vs. Duke

This should be a great game to watch if you’re craving offense which was sorely lacking in many tournament games so far.  Doug McDermott vs. Ryan Kelly is the matchup to watch here.  I look for McDermott to get his points but don’t know if his supporting cast will match Kelly’s.  Seth Curry could have a big game for the Blue Devils here but this one will be close.

ATS Play: Creighton +5
