It’s another football Friday! Welcome to the second edition of Friday Football Frenzy! This week I’ll touch on some off the field stories as well as my thoughts on some of the most interesting games of the weekend.
I like many Chiefs fans woke up Tuesday morning thinking maybe Tony Gonzalez should come back. The Chiefs are 5-0 and Tony’s Falcons are floundering at 1-4 and if Julio Jones is out the rest of the year, they’re going nowhere. Then talk started coming from KC that they’re interested. Some Chiefs fans are all for it while others don’t want him back since he asked out. I for one would love to see him back and think he makes the Chiefs more than simply a playoff contender. The Chiefs need more receiving threats. With Tony G drawing attention over the middle it could open things up for D-Bowe on the outside and give the Chiefs an offense worthy of a Super Bowl contender. The defense is already playoff ready. It’s just the offense that needs some more punch.
This week also has the biggest spread in NFL history as Jacksonville travels to Denver. The Jags are the worst team I’ve watched. They look far worse than the 0-16 Lions of just a few years ago. It’s going to be tough for this team to win a game this year. Sunday’s game is one I wouldn’t bet. Denver should cruise to an easy win but will they be dismissive of the Jags? Is Jacksonville treating this as their Super Bowl? The Denver defense is great when playing with a lead so the Jags better hope they get the ball first and put it in the end zone or this game could get really out of hand.
A crazy idea popped in my head a couple of days ago…what if Brett Favre came back and QB’d the Jags? It would make them more entertaining to watch for sure. They’re headed toward the worst season in decades of the NFL…maybe ever so why not take a chance? Just my wild idea for the week.
On the college front, I think there are some intriguing match-ups in college football tomorrow.
Oklahoma has the chance to end Mack Brown’s career at Texas. The Red River Rivalry has the biggest implications it’s had in a few years. I expect Texas to put forth the effort but I don’t see their defense slowing Oklahoma down. The Sooners -14 are our free pick of the week as I expect OU to put points on the scoreboard frequently.
Ole Miss and Texas A&M could be very fun to watch if you like points. These two should light up the scoreboard.
Also in the SEC this weekend, I think there are two possible upsets. Bowling Green and Missouri travel but could challenge their hosts on Saturday. Mississippi State hosts Bowling Green and needs to win convincingly. People are starting to doubt Dan Mullen. He’s had some good season but seems to have hit a plateau with the Bulldogs. This is a game he can’t afford to lose but is playing a good team that’s capable of the upset.
Missouri is riding high with a unblemished record but hasn’t faced a team on Georgia’s level yet. Georgia continues to get beat up as the season progresses. They have been winning but losing players to injury along the way. Missouri should keep this one close but expect Aaron Murray to lead a late game winner.
The game that I’m most interested in is Oregon at Washington. The Huskies come off a loss to Stanford but their stadium will be rocking for this game. ESPN’s College Gameday is at the game so the atmosphere will be stellar. The Ducks haven’t been tested this year. They’ve been cruising past 50 points all season and their defense will face their most skilled offense of the season. I think Oregon wins this but look for Keith Price to make some plays to keep his team in this one.
