Matt’s Mind: NFL Week 4 Reaction

by Matt Fischer

NFL Week 4 provided some surprises and confirmed some suspicions.  First let’s look at the surprises.  Cleveland won again beating the Bengals 17-6.   Brian Hoyer is looking good QB’ing the Browns.  They’ve still got a great defense and as long as the offense doesn’t turn the ball over they should be in every game.

Matt Schuab throwing that interception late in the game by blindly tossing the ball up in the air was shocking.  He is going to be haunted by that at least the rest of the season and perhaps his career if Houston fails to win a game in the playoffs this year.

How about the Bills?  They beat Baltimore and are looking much more competitive than I was expecting them to be this season.  Doug Marrone is getting rid of the doubters who questioned his drafting of E.J. Manuel in the first round.

Some teams are starting to really look bad now that we’ve seen them play for a quarter of the 2013 NFL season.  We’ll start with the Giants.  The G-men simply can’t protect Eli Manning and the play-calling seems questionable.  There are grumblings in the locker room and it looks like it’s only going to get worse.  Luckily for them, their division is awful so if they can get it together, they can be a playoff team.

It’s getting ugly in Pittsburgh now at 0-4.  The Steelers defense isn’t what it used to be and the offense turns it over too often.  They’ve got to get a wide receiver to step up and get up routinely so Big Ben can get rid of the ball sooner.

The Bucs are in turmoil.  Josh Freeman is done in Tampa and Mike Glennon only mustered 10 points this past weekend.  They seem to have some problems on the offensive line as their running game isn’t what it was last season.  Greg Schiano’s days are numbered.

The Jags are the worst team I’ve seen in the NFL in at least the past decade.  They are horrendous.  Their passing game is the worst in the league.

Jets’ fans have to be shaking their head as they’ll have another infamous play the media should be replaying for years to come.  After Mark Sanchez’s “butt fumble” last season, Geno Smith tried to switch the ball from his right hand to his left…behind his back.  Seriously.  Take a look if you haven’t seen it.

With some good QB prospects getting ready to join the ranks of the NFL next season there are several teams who could be in the market for a new one including the Jaguars, Rams, Bucs, Browns, Raiders and

My weekly awards:

Player of the Week: Drew Brees (QB – Saints) – had 413 yards and 4 touchdowns…a typical MNF performance for him.

Team of the Week:  New England Patriots – The Pats were banged up and went to Atlanta and took it to the Falcons.  Impressive road win for them to stay perfect.

Game of the Week:  Lions vs. Bears – They combine for 72.  The Lions dominated the first half and the Bears tried to rally late but came up 8 points shy.
