Matt’s Mind on the 2013 NCAA Championship Game

A few weeks ago a field of 68 was announced by the tournament committee and two teams have won five games to get to tonight.  They’re 40 minutes from being able to raise a banner and declare themselves national champions.

Michigan controlled most the game against Syracuse.  They picked apart the zone and made their shots.  They did a good job on the glass as well get some great second chance opportunities to put some distance between the two teams.

Lousivlle struggled for much of the game against Wichita State.  The Shockers kept turnovers to a minimum which kept the Cardinals from getting many fast break opportunities.

Michigan matches up well against Louisville in that they have great guards and active big men who can stretch the defense.  I think the key to this game will be Mitch McGary drawing Gorgui Dieng away from the basket to open driving lanes.  That should allow the Michigan perimeter players to get some easy baskets.

Louisville needs to stay out of foul trouble and hit the three point shots.  They’ve got to handle the ball well and work it around for a good shot.  They need to hit the boards and find the open three.

With the 30 footer Trey Burke hit against Kansas, I have a feeling Michigan just may be a team of destiny.   If you’d have asked me who I’d have taken to win the title in November or December I’d have said these two teams.  They played so well at the start of the year and then hit some stumbling blocks in conference play.  They’ve shown tremendous resilience in the tournament and now are ready to capture the crown.

I think the talent is pretty even.  I see this is as a toss up game so I’d take the points but am not confident either way.  This should be an outstanding game.
