The NFL Draft Lottery

MLB Predictions

by Matt Fischer

Why is the NFL continuing to reward ineptitude through the draft?  The NFL allows the teams to pick in reverse order of the success of their season in hopes it’ll create a competitive balance when all it’s doing is perpetuating their losing.  The NFL needs to create a NFL Draft Lottery to stop allowing teams to tank or simply be rewarded for losing more games than the rest of the league when they continue to do it season after season (I’m looking at you Jaguars).

The Jacksonville Jaguars are picking #1 again this year.  Yes they sat atop the draft last year as well.  In 12 of the past 13 season, they’ve picked in the top 10 and for six straight seasons they picked in the top 5.  Is rewarding them with a high draft pick helping the league’s competitive balance?

It’s time to stop rewarding mediocrity and giving other teams a shot at #1 when they’re showing improve season to season.  It’s time for the NFL Draft Lottery!

What's Inside

Lottery Entries

In my draft lottery, there is a sliding scale of the number of lottery entries you will have based upon the number of win you have that season going from 20 to 1.  0 wins gets 20 picks while 10 or more wins only gets you one lottery entry.  Like the NBA, the draft lottery is only for the teams that do not qualify for the playoffs.

Lottery Results

The top four spots of the draft will be drawn at random.  I held my own drawing of the 18 teams and it did reorder the 2022 NFL Draft.  The top 6 teams were scrambled with 7-18 holding their spots. The Carolina Panthers jumped up from #6 to the top spot!

More TV Programming for the NFL

Imagine this 2 hour special on one of the NFL’s television partners or their own network.  They reveal the draft order and then go in to a mock draft that evening based upon the results.  This could just add more money to the NFL’s bottom line and generate offseason interest for the non-NFL Playoff teams.
