Matt’s Mind: College Football Week 1 Recap

Week 1 is in the books.  Some big surprises as we saw several FCS go on the road and knock off FBS teams.  That’s gotta put a few of those coaches on the hot seat.  Kansas State was only a couple weeks away last year from a birth in the BCS Championship and now without Colin Klein they lose at home to North Dakota State.  NDSU is a good FCS program but K-State allowing them to have an 18 play drive in the fourth to clinch the game.  Then we have Eastern Washington lighting up Oregon State.  That was a shocker as well.  Mike Riley has to be worried about his defense allowing 49 points with some potent Pac-12 offenses on the schedule this year.  He’s got some time to fix it but it’s gonna give him some sleepless nights for weeks.

The Big 12 suffered two upsets as Iowa State joined K-State in the fallen giants category this weekend.  That’s not a good start to the year when the top coach in your conference, Bob Stoops of Oklahoma, says in the offseason your conference is the best top to bottom in the country.

Here are my weekend awards:

Player of the Week:  Tahj Boyd (Clemson) – He played great in the biggest game of the weekend.  He accounted for all five of Clem

Team of the Week:  McNeese State – This one kind of flew under the radar but they destroyed South Florida 51-23.  For Willie Taggert, you can’t have much worse of a debut than that.  I’ll give a shoutout to McNeese State for their impressive road win this weekend.

Game of the Week:

My recommended plays for the weekend were atrocious.  I apologize for such awful suggestions.  1-6 is unacceptable and will be improved upon this weekend.  Good news is SportsFormulator on all 75 games we had beat the picks you get if you’re an ESPN Insider.  We beat both of their predictors straight up and against the spread in 43 common games.  We were above 50% ATS and neither of there’s were.  You’re still getting great value here at SportsFormulator compared to the competition.

What to look forward to in week 2:

Michigan against Notre Dame – This game is my top preseason play of the year.  I’ve seen this game as a mismatch and nothing last weekend changed my mind.

Georgia against South Carolina – How does Georgia rebound after losing a big game last week.  The SEC East could be decided with this game.

Florida at Miami – Florida’s offense is going to need to improve to win this game.  It struggled against last week against a Toledo team not known for strong D.

San Jose State at Stanford – San Jose State is a good squad.  Stanford can’t look past them.  This game will be closer than people think.
