Formulator Football Friday – September 8, 2017

by Matt Fischer

What a performance by the Kansas City Chiefs last night to open the 2017 NFL season!  They took it to the Patriots on the road winning 42-27.  QB Alex Smith made plays down the field and RB Kareem Hunt set a NFL record in his debut.

I signed up for the Westgate SuperContest yesterday.  You can follow my entry by checking for SportsFormulator on the leaderboard.  It’s my first entry in the contest.  This will be the biggest contest they’ve ever had as over 2400 entries are expected.

For the contest, I had three strong picks right away and then debated another three teams for my final two choices.

College Football Week 2

Great weekend last week as premium ATS picks went 3-0-1 in College Football!  We have 4 premium picks for week 2 college football.  If our pick packages or pick of the week don’t make you a profit, we refund your money.  No string attached.  Win or refund.  Get our picks in the Pick Shop so you can win this weekend.

This weekend in College Football we have high profile match-ups like Oklahoma at Ohio State, Auburn at Clemson, Stanford at USC and Georgia at Notre Dame.  All will impact the playoff race as only one of those four is a conference game.  These are the type of games the committee will look at when seeding the playoff teams.  Access our data driven week 2 college football predictions.

NFL Week 1

We have 4 premium picks for NFL week 1, three sides and one total.  If our pick packages or pick of the week don’t make you a profit, we refund your money.  No string attached.  Win or refund.  Get our picks in the Pick Shop so you can win this weekend.

Raiders at Titans is a game that’ll be interesting on Sunday.  Both are playoff contenders and the winner.

Many consider the Jets to be “tanking” this season.  How will they respond on Sunday in Buffalo?  Their offense doesn’t inspire confidence and getting rid of Sheldon Richardson on defense wouldn’t appear to help things either.

I think there will be some upsets in NFL week 1.  The 49ers are a top candidate.  The Formula has it a 1 point Carolina win but Kyle Shanahan’s familiarity with the Panthers from being OC in Atlanta could help push his team to a 1-0 start.

Get all of our NFL week 1 predictions, survivor pool pick and more!

Today’s #FreePickFriday is for Sunday’s NFL action.  Take the OVER 50.5 for Raiders at Titans.

Access our winning information all season long by signing up for our weekly emails during football season.

Formulator Friday – November 11, 2016

by Matt Fischer

The sports year is at it’s busiest now with college basketball tipping off tonight.  For me, it means longer days packed with sports.  I don’t mind it, but I’m usually ready for things to slow down come March.  Luckily the NCAA Tournament is my favorite part of the sports year. That first day of the tournament is the best day of the year to me.

College Basketball

We have 66 games college basketball predictions for tonight.  You can get our predictions daily through the NCAA Tournament Championship game.

The Armed Forces Classic has top teams playing in their season openers as Kansas plays Indiana and Michigan State plays Arizona.  Wins here should give these teams a lot of confidence for the rest of the season.  Read our preview for these two games.

UFC 205

The UFC has its best card ever on Saturday night at UFC 205 from Madison Square Garden.  Champions Eddie Alvarez and Conor McGregor fight in the Main Event for the 155 pound title.

The card features two other championship fights including Tyron Woodley vs. Stephen Thompson and Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz.  12 fights on the card with great match-ups and I’ve picked all 12.  If you’re a UFC fan, you need to watch Saturday night.

College Football

A solid 4-1 (80%) ATS last weekend with premium college football picks!  We have 5 picks for week 11 in the Pick Shop.

Ole Miss vs. Texas A&M is a battle of back-up QB’s tomorrow.  Chad Kelly and Trevor Knight are out injured so both teams will trot out new signal callers.

Oklahoma State vs. Texas Tech has a total of 90…the oddsmakers basically don’t expect the defenses to get off the bus on Saturday.

Picking a college football player of the year is tough this season.  There have been some spectacular players but nobody has really separated themselves so far in my book.  Right now, I’d give it to Jalen Hurts.  He always seems to make a big play when Alabama needs it.  He’s gone against one of the nation’s toughest schedules and performed well every week.

Get our data driven week 11 college football predictions here.

College Football Consensus Picks – These are game winner picks from you our readers.

1 – Washington (93%) against USC
2 – Stanford (86%) at Oregon

6 – Florida Atlantic (77%)
7 – Troy (64%) against Appalachian State
8 – Iowa State (69%) at Kansas
9 – Missouri (62%) against Vanderbilt
10 – Memphis (62%) against South Florida
11 – LSU (57%) at Arkansas
12 – Navy (54%) against Tulsa

Our survivor pick lost in OT last week dropping us to 7-2 with our NFL Survivor Pool pick.  Our two losses came in close games.  Last week, the Vikings were the only team to make it through our screening process and lost in OT.

Three teams made it through this week.  See our week 10 NFL Survivor Pool Pick.

Some good AFC vs. NFC games this weekend including Seahawks at Patriots (our preseason Super Bowl prediction). Chiefs at Panthers, Broncos at Saints and Bengals at Giants.  You can see our NFL predictions for all of these games plus the rest of week 10.

Formulator Football Friday – November 4, 2016

by Matt Fischer

It’s Friday and that means a weekend full of football awaits us!  We’re in the second half of the 2016 college football season and the midpoint of the NFL season.  Teams now begin jockeying for position.

College football teams are either making their push to a birth in the conference championship or trying to get bowl eligible.

In the NFL, teams are focused on staying healthy and trying to win to separate themselves from the pack.  19 of the 32 NFL teams have 3 or 4 wins at this point in the season.

College Football Week 10

One of the biggest games of the season is Saturday night as Alabama and LSU collide.  Ed Orgeron has had LSU playing great since taking over earlier in the season but will face his biggest test in a Crimson Tide team that has only been challenged into the fourth quarter once this season.

In the Big Ten, Nebraska and Ohio State battle in what could be a conference championship game preview.  Iowa and Penn State play on Saturday in a game where Penn State can keep trying to hang in the race for the Big Ten East.  Their win over Ohio State has them in the running for the division crown.  They can’t let up against an Iowa team that is trying to make it back to a Big Ten Championship game.  This week’s Free Pick is Iowa +7.5.

Who wins this weekend?  You can see in our week 10 college football predictions.  Make your own picks for Saturday’s games in our College Football Survivor contest.

As part of our anniversary last weekend, I published my 3 part series called the College Football Revolution.  It has three improvements I’d make for college football to get even better.

Read the 3 parts:
Ultimate Realignment: The Death of the Power 5
Power Scheduling
The New Playoff

The College Football Playoff committee released their rankings this week.  The formula predicted the semi-final match-ups and then the national championship.  See who would win if the playoff were this weekend.

NFL Week 9

This week of the NFL saw a bit of a shocker as Norv Turner resigned as offensive coordinator of the Vikings.  The Vikings would be the two seed in the NFC if the playoffs started this weekend.  This news broke after I’d made this week’s NFL survivor pool pick.  We’re at the point in the season where it gets much more difficult to make the survivor pick but we found a team that fit the criteria and we’re staying with it.

The AFC West is looking like it has three solid playoff contenders in the Chiefs, Raiders and Broncos.  All three would be in the playoff this week.  How would they do?  You can see in our NFL Playoff predictions for this week.

The NFC East has a big match-up as the Giants host the Eagles.  Both need the win to stay within reach of the NFC’s best Cowboys.

Who wins in week 9?  Get our NFL predictions now and make your own picks in this weekend’s NFL Survivor contest.

Formulator Football Friday – October 21, 2016

by Matt Fischer

Welcome to the weekend!

Justin Fuente has VA Tech in a good position.  This team is getting better every week.  Impressive win over Miami last night 37-16.

Will Aaron Rodgers come out another “relax” message to the Packers’ fans?  Even though they won, the Packers struggled in the first half before being able to pull away in the second half.

College Football Week 8

The weekend schedule is dominated by a massive SEC showdown as Alabama and Texas A&M collide.  Rarely will you see two undefeated teams playing the in the middle of the season where the spread is nearly three touchdowns.

For Jalen Hurts, its his chance to jump to the top of the Heisman race.  If the Alabama QB rips up the Aggies’ D, he will become the front runner.

Colorado at Stanford is the weekend’s most intriguing game.  The Buffs are surging while the Cardinal are stumbling.  For Colorado, this would be a big win for the program while for Stanford, a loss would have fans ready to write this season off.

Here’s our cheat sheet for the college football weekend:

Top 5 Blowout Games

1. Illinois at Michigan – 31 points

NFL Week 7

We were on the verge of the NFL’s biggest game of the season a week ago, but due to the loss of Ben Roethlisberger to injury, the Steelers vs. Patriots game has lost its luster.

The NFL returns to London on Sunday morning for the Rams vs. Giants.  I think it’s ridiculous the league continually takes games away from its fans.  If the league wants to know why ratings are down, their treatment of fans could be a big reason why.

Here’s our cheat sheet for the NFL weekend:

Top 5 Highest Scoring Teams

1. Falcons – 31 points

Formulator Football Friday – October 7, 2016

by Matt Fischer

Welcome to NFL Week 5 and College Football Week 6.

College Football Week 6

Is the U back?  The ‘Canes can prove they’re back with a win over rival Florida State on Saturday.  Mark Richt has gotten Miami headed in the right direction during a season that’s seen Florida State stumble.

The Red River Rivalry happens on Saturday again with Charlie Strong’s firing being rumored.  Oklahoma pulled out a win last week to salvage the season.  Both teams need this win.  Who wants it more?

LSU got the Orgeron era off to a great start with a 42-7 win against Missouri last Saturday night in Baton Rouge.  Now they go on the road to Florida.  The LSU offense will be tested by the Florida defense.  Look for this one to be low scoring and be decided late.

Get our college football predictions for all of week 6 and premium ATS picks in the Pick Shop.

Make your picks on who wins in our week 6 college football pick ’ems.

Free Pick – Boston College +16 against Clemson (Friday)

NFL Week 5

Tom Brady is back for the Patriots.  After being shutout last week, the 3-1 Patriots welcome their starting QB back from suspension.  Do the Browns have any chance at ruining Brady’s comeback?  It’s unlikely but this could be closer than expected.

Dak Prescott gets the biggest test of his career against a good Bengals team in Dallas this week.  Can he beat a playoff team?

The Steelers come off of a beatdown of the Chiefs last Sunday night to host the Jets.  Can they keep turnovers coming from the Jets?

Can Carson Wentz keep the Eagles rolling?  Philly goes to Detroit this weekend.  Will the Lions figure things out or continue to be unpredictable?

Who do you think wins in NFL week 5?  Make your picks now in our free NFL Pick ‘Ems.

Free Pick –  Eagles -3 at Lions

Welcome to Formulator Football Friday!

I’ll be going live at Noon ET today on Periscope to talk football with you and give out free picks.  If you miss the live broadcast you can watch it later on Periscope.

This will start happening more frequently so stay tuned on social media  for alerts when we go live.  I’m hoping to have Saturday and Sunday morning gameday broadcasts and a Sunday afternoon broadcast predicting college football point spreads for the week ahead and recapping the previous week.

Free NFL Pick for this Week:
Take the Bears +3 against the Lions on Sunday.

I’ll have another free college football pick on the live broadcast on Periscope today.

Get our NFL and college football picks for this weekend for $5 in the Pick Shop.

College Football Week 5

Huge games in college football this week starting tonight with Stanford at Washington.  The winner becomes the Pac-12 favorite and de facto playoff contender for the conference.

Home teams usually do well on these Thursday and Friday night games so watch out for Washington.

Saturday’s biggest games are Louisville at Clemson and Wisconsin at Michigan.  Both games will be similar to the Pac-12 game on Friday night.  The winners become playoff contenders.  A Louisville win could get them some votes for #1 since they’d already have wins over Clemson and Florida State this season.

The game to watch is Saturday night in Baton Rouge.  How does LSU respond to this week’s dismal of Les Miles?

Who do you think wins this weekend?  Make your picks in our free College Football Pick ‘Ems.  Pick game winners or Against The Spread.

See our week 5 college football predictions and power rankings.

Free Pick – Oklahoma State +9.5 at Baylor

I want your input on SportsFormulator and would appreciate if you could answer 5 quick questions here.

NFL Week 3

Bill Belichick is the greatest NFL coach of all time.  Cheating aside, his ability to continually win regardless of the 11 players that line up on a given play is remarkable.   Using his third string QB, Belichick guided the Pats to a win over a playoff team last night.

Another profitable weekend with our NFL picks!  We went 2 for 3 cashing tickets again keeping us at 67% ATS on the season.

Broncos at Bengals is the big game in the NFL this weekend.  The Bengals lost in Denver on Monday night last season that ended up giving the Broncos home field throughout the NFL Playoffs.  The Bengals will have Andy Dalton for this one though and playing at home will want to bounce back from a loss in week 2.

Can the Seahawks and Rams score this week?  They’ve both struggled to put points up this season.  Last week they combined for 12 points in the game with the Rams winning 9-3.

The two games I’m most interested in this weekend are the Raiders at Titans and Ravens at Jaguars.  These are teams that have been up and down this season so can they show their potential and win this weekend?

Get week 3 NFL predictions and power rankings.

Consensus Picks – NFL Week 3 Game Winners
1 – Giants 95% against Redskins
2 – Bucs 95% against Rams
3 – Dolphins 95% against Browns
4 – Packers 91% against Lions
5 – Cowboys 91% against Bears
6 – Panthers 86% against Vikings
7 – Saints 86% against Falcons
8 – Steelers 82% at Eagles
9 – Cardinals 77% at Bills
10 – Seahawks 77% against 49ers
11 – Chiefs 68% against Jets
12 – Colts 68% against
13 – Titans 59% against Raiders
14 – Bengals 59% against Broncos
15 – Jaguars 50% against Ravens

If you haven’t made your picks yet, make them now.

College Football Week 4

Some good conference match-ups in college football this weekend.  Tonight, USC visits Utah.  These have proved to be tricky games in the past for road teams.

Michigan State comes off of an impressive road win at Notre Dame to host Wisconsin.  The Badgers have flown under the radar since a big win over LSU to start the year.  Are they ready to take a big game on the road?

I’m most interested in the Arkansas at Texas A&M and Oklahoma State at Baylor this Saturday.

A&M has looked good this season and Bret Bielema’s Razorbacks are always a tough game.  This is a game that’s going to go to the wire.

Baylor gets their first test of the season as the Cowboys of OSU come to town.  For Jim Grobe, it’s a big step up in competition for his team.  Okie State rebounded last week from being robbed of a win against Central Michigan.  The Cowboys are going to keep this game close.

Get our week 4 college football predictions and power rankings.  Check early Sunday morning for my new Formulator Forward column, where I review the previous week of college football and predict the next week’s point spreads for big games.

Consensus Picks – College Football Week 4 Game Winners
1 – Western Michigan 96% against Georgia Southern
2 – Stanford 92% at UCLA
3 – Nebraska 92% at Northwestern
4 – Florida State 84% at South Florida
5 – Ole Miss 84% against Georgia
6 – Michigan State 80% against Wisconsin
7 – LSU 80% at Auburn
8 – Tennessee 72% against Florida
9 – South Carolina 72% at Kentucky
10 – California 64% at Arizona State

College Football Week 3

Saturday is stacked with big games!  Three games feature top 10 match-ups and all have huge college football playoff implications including Ohio State at Oklahoma, Alabama at Ole Miss and Florida State at Louisville.

The Big 12 desperately needs Oklahoma to beat Ohio State. The league has been beat up the first two weeks of the season including OU’s week 1 loss to Houston. Big Game Bob Stoops needs to pull out all of the stops to beat the Buckeyes this week.

Can Ole Miss do the unthinkable and beat Alabama three straight years? That could earn Hugh Freeze a spot in the coaching hall of fame if it happens.

My Top 3 Games to Watch in Week 3:

1) Florida State at Louisville – Bobby Petrino’s Cardinals have been putting up huge numbers on offense this season but will face their biggest defensive test of the season against the Seminoles. How will the ‘Noles handle the early kick on the road with a young QB?

2) Texas at Cal – The Longhorns are still riding high after their week 1 win over Notre Dame. The line has kept moving to the Longhorns. The Formulator disagrees with that as we have Cal winning by 2. I think taking a freshman QB on the road and giving 8 points is dangerous.

3) Miami at Appalachian State – Mark Richt is off to a great start at his alma mater but they’re on the road against a good team. We called for App State to win this game in the preseason and are sticking to it. After their close call at Tennessee, App State doesn’t want to let another win over a Power 5 team slip away.

Formulator Football Friday – September 9, 2016

by Matt Fischer

Football is finally back in full force as the NFL kicked off last night.  It’s great to have a packed weekend of games.  Let’s get to the games!

Opening night of the NFL season featured a Super Bowl rematch that went to the wire.  The Panthers missed a FG at the end and dropped a 21-20 game to the Broncos.  Back to back losses to the same team has to sting.

Unfortunately this Sunday is marred by change at QB for three contenders.  Tom Brady starts his four game suspension, Tony Romo (Cowboys) and Teddy Bridgewater (Vikings) are injured and out.

For the Cowboys, what looked to be a promising season ahead is now in the hands of two rookies, Dak Prescott at QB and Ezekiel Elliot at RB.  Elliot should get a lot of touches to help take the pressure off of Prescott at QB.  The Cowboys were considered a contender with Romo, can they still find a way to the playoffs without him this season?

For the Vikings, a huge blow.  Their young QB who’d taken them to the playoffs last year is out for the entire season.  The team looked ready to make a run at another playoff birth until the injury to Bridgewater happened.  They’ve traded for Sam Bradford but how quickly can he adapt to Minnesota?  I think they’ve still got a shot at a wildcard but they’re gonna need the defense to keep them in every game this season.

My top 3 NFL games this weekend:

Patriots at Cardinals – How does Carson Palmer rebound from a disastrous NFC Championship game?  Everyone will be glued to this game to see how the Brady-less Pats do on the road against a playoff team.  This is the must see game of the week.

Giants at Cowboys – They usually always seem to have great games in Dallas.  With a rookie backfield, this will be must watch TV.  Could see legends in the making or another great disappointment for Cowboy fans.

Packers at Jaguars – I think the Jaguars will be much better than they’ve been in years.  The Pack welcome Jordy Nelson back so look for he and Rodgers to connect for at least one TD on Sunday.  I think the Jags keep this close throughout and have a good chance at the upset.

My top 3 games to watch this weekend:

Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee – This game is expected to have 150,000 people at it as they play at Bristol Motor Speedway.  Just the optics of seeing a football game being played at a speedway in front of that number of people will be worth tuning in for on Saturday night (8 PM ET on ABC).  Tennessee has been here all week how it struggled with Appalachian State last Thursday so it has something to prove on the national stage Saturday night.

Western Kentucky at Alabama – Alabama just ran over USC in week 1.  It was a dominate performance from the Crimson Tide.  Now they get a good Hilltopper team.  I’m not watching because I think Western Kentucky can pull the upset, but can they hang around.   We predict ‘Bama by 30 but I’m interested to see if their offense can put some points on the Tide’s defense.

Arkansas at TCU – Both teams won in week 1 but were unimpressive in doing so.  This is a big game for the SEC and Big 12.  Each conference needs a non-conference win after they got beat up last week.  I think Bret Bielema finds a way to take this one deep in the fourth quarter and have his team in position to get a win on the road.
